Mistake Ritual

"The Mistake Ritual"

Mistakes should not be dreaded.   They are a powerful tool for learning and improving.   Many successful people credit their success to being willing to risk making a mistake and learn from it.

"Mistakes are what kids worry about the most.  An athlete on the field feels exposed for all to see.  The fear of making a mistake occupies so much mindshare of youth athletes that it can paralyze them.  If we can reduce the fear of making a mistake, there will be much more energy available to trying to learn the game and excel at it."

The Positive Coaching Allliance has developed the "mistake ritual" as a tool to help athletes learn to not fear mistakes and to bounce back from them quickly.

"A mistake ritual is simply a gesture and/or statement that individuals use to ward off the fear of making mistakes so they don't play timidly.  A mistake ritual allows you to quickly "reset" and get ready for the next play or decision without wallowing in the past and beating yourself up for haveing made a mistake."

There are many mistake rituals, but two that are especially helpful:
  • One is "Flushing Mistakes."  Mistakes stink.  What do we do with stinky suff?  We flush it down the toilet.   When a player makes a mistake, the entire team can show support by putting their hands above their shoulders and making a motion like they are flushing a toilet.
  • Another mistake ritual is "No Sweat."  This involves swiping two fingers across one's forehead like you were flicking sweat from your brow.

Get everyone involved - the players, the coaches, the fans.  Determine your own team ritual and watch how the players focus more readily on the next play!
